Thank you for giving me the opportunity to teach. This weekend after a tour in Russia, where I visited Moscow and St. Petersburg I really felt the importance of the wording, sharing is caring. There is a paradigm shift in what type of implants we may be able to use in the future. Regulatory authorities worldwide are clearly acting towards a less textured environment. And in some parts of the world they have even put a ban on all textured implants only allowing usage of smooth implants. Australia was the latest one, two weeks ago. However there is also an ever growing demand from patients to have their textured implants changed to smooth or even removed due to fear of BIA-ALCL or other possible implant related problems. These events have processed much faster than expected by many colleagues and the unfortunate consequence is that many Surgeons worldwide without experience using smooth implants are in the dark about best practices on smooth. I am grateful we launched this my first advanced masterclass on smooth devices, sharing my 4,5 year experience and data on Smooth Motiva implants, their pros and cons explaining some fundamental differences between smooth and textured, especially cohesive anatomical, something I have been teaching on for the last 14 years. More than hundred experienced plastic surgeons attended this weekends meetings. Their questions and concerns definitely showed the need and necessity of these educational sessions. If regulatory authorities act in a way, like it or not, where the safety of textured devices are questioned, it is our responsibility to educate our younger peers,so they can perform in a sound ,safe and best of ways towards their patients do they choose to use smooth. Unfortunately the fact is that in the future it might not even be a choice, something No one clearly could wish for this knowing there is no perfect implant for every patient.
